TWELVE

Priscilla stepped into the waiting room of The Bad Place, the physical therapy clinic where Regan worked. She particularly loved that name. Ninety percent of the people who went through rehab there agreed it fit.

“Hi, Syd,” she greeted the receptionist.

“Hey, Cilla, how are you?” Sydney asked.

“Great. I was hoping Regan maybe had a minute?” She could have texted Regan, but she didn’t check her messages when she was with patients and Priscilla really needed to plant this seed right now.

It could have waited. Priscilla knew that deep down. But there was this sense of urgency driving her. She needed to know that everything was going to work out with Jase and the community center. The sooner she had all of her plans working, the sooner she’d feel secure.

Because the way she was feeling for the guy was only getting stronger, and, if he was going to pack up and leave in another week or so, she needed to not get any more attached.

If, however, he was going to stick around for a bit and get the community center put together, she would be more comfortable getting close to him.

She hadn’t expected to want to be close.

Well, at least not with their clothes on. But within five minutes of having sex with him, she’d been struck by feelings that went far beyond orgasm endorphins. That fondness she’d confessed to him was part of it. But today, having muffins with him, talking and laughing, seeing his friends show up to help him out without even being asked—and seeing how that obviously touched Jase—had made her realize that she really wanted to see him happy. She wanted to be a part of making him happy.

And when her mother had called to tell her that the city council was not on board with her plan, she’d felt a shockingly strong surge of defensiveness and protectiveness. She wanted Jase to prove them all wrong. And she wanted to help him do it.

So much that she was willing to blackmail people.

She should probably be worried about that, but she wasn’t.

She was more worried about the fact that she was probably falling in love with Jase Hawkins.

“She’s just finishing up with someone. She probably has five minutes then,” Syd said, waving her toward Regan’s office. “I’ll tell her you’re here.”

“Thanks.” Priscilla always got special treatment from Syd.

Syd was a single mom of a little boy who had some medical issues, worked full-time here, and also helped out at the bar for extra cash. So, whenever she needed treats for school or something for a potluck at church, Priscilla covered her. She baked or made Rice Krispie treats or threw together a casserole. It was no big deal and helped Syd a ton. And then Syd did things like let her sneak in to get an ultrasound on her lower back—or to ask Regan a huge favor—in the middle of the day without an appointment.

Priscilla paced the office Regan shared with her friend and fellow PT, Destiny, as she waited.
